We are looking for a Space Debris Engineer to join the team.
The daily tasks of the ideal candidate will include:
- Support mission customers for the compliance verification analysis tasks, including re-entry safety
- Contribute to mission milestone reviews for compliance aspects w.r.t. mitigation guidelines
- Perform, in support of missions, runs with DRAMA, Scarab, iOTA and Snappshot and document the results
- Follow-up external research, as well as internal Research Fellow and OSIP activities and plan/adapt internal work accordingly
- Support CDF sessions
- Support the definition of the studies for TDE, GSTP and other ESA programs in the area of space debris.
- Provide Training on OPS-SD software and processes to internal and external trainees
- Routine operation of ESA’s conjunction event prediction system for internal and external customers
- Detailed analysis and consultancy in the case of a high-risk conjunction event in liaison with the Flight Control Teams, external customers and Flight Dynamics
- Contributions to the Maintenance, evolution and upgrade of ESA’s conjunction event prediction system and documentation including procedures
- Contributions to LEOPs where expertise on space debris is required
- Contributions to the development of the Consolidated Astrodynamics Platform, Debris Mitigation Facility, and applications based on them
- Contributions to the evolution and upgrade of ESA’s DISCOS database system and systems based thereon
- Contribute to ESA’s re-entry forecasting process
- Support for projects of the Space Safety Programme
- Support to the interfacing with external entities, such as CSpOC, for the analysis of conjunction events
- Participate in the office’s regular coordination and routine meetings
- Present and promote ESA achievements, recent research and work performed at the Space Debris Office at international conferences (once per year), and support related public relations or outreach activities
- Support the organisation of conferences and workshops, and run high-level space debris office demonstrations in the space debris facility
- Provision of technical expertise to ESA's Technical Responsible for responding to TV, broadcast and newspaper interview requests on space debris
What we expect from you?
- Relevant university degree(s) in the field of either astronomy, mathematics, engineering, or physics
- Develop solutions to technical (mathematical and dynamical) problems
- Ability to define, implement, validate and operate software which applies the above solutions (using at least Linux scripting languages and demonstrated knowledge of Fortran or C++ or Python)
- Good communication and presentation skills and ability to work independently but communicate effectively and efficiently within a larger team.
- Fluency in English, both in speech and writing
- Familiar with the ESOC environment
- Familiar/experienced with Space Debris tasks
- Experience in dealing with external interfaces
- Experience with Linux, network services and protocols, and system administration
- Ability to multi-task efficiently, working on multiple activities and missions simultaneously.
- Availability for On-call work
The successful candidate will have previous proven experience in similar roles and mentioned technologies.
