We are looking for a Linux System Administrator that will be responsible to maintain, upgrade and provide support for clients’ software, hardware, and networks. He/She will also be responsible for maintaining system infrastructure, by including (but not limited to): installing new and rebuilding existing servers, firewalls, testing computer equipment, backing up databases, and installing and updating malware preventative software.

Responsabilities

  • Set up, configure, install, operate, maintain, upgrade, improve, and secure all relevant client computer systems and peripherals (i.e. switches, routers, firewalls, etc.) used for data acquisition, archiving, processing, dissemination, and quality control.
  • Fully diagram/document software repositories and websites all system architecture, modifications, networking changessoftware used, code developed and/or modified, scripts utilized, existing and upgraded telemetry.
  • Communicate technical concerns and solutions to many different people with varying degrees of technical knowledge and work with individuals in all departments to help solve their technical issues.
  • Coordinate and cooperate with other contractors and/or government personnel to simplify and standardize network operations. Assist with integration of relevant systems; optimize systems; manage the flow of data between systems; minimize maintenance, costs, and data latency
  • Document work and provide status updates through frequent emails to the client technical liaison. These reports shall discuss work addressed, progress made, problems encountered, work remaining, and an estimated timeline for task completion.
  • Maintain daily and weekly reporting of site and communication systems (telemetry) status, and advise USGS employees and contractors on using and responding to these reports.
  • Maintain the existing or develop new quality control, processing, monitoring, and alerting software and scripts.
  • Develop and/or maintain automated transfers of metadata to the data archive, and to other locations as requested.

Requirements:

  • 2+ years experience in setting up, maintaining and securing Redhat Linux machines and network devices.
  • 2+ years experience directly interfacing with users to diagnose and resolve their technical problems quickly
  • Linux/Ubuntu in an administrative perspective
  • Installation and customization of open-source apps.
  • Strong scripting skills (PHP, PERL, JAVA etc.)
  • Experience in Debian/Ubuntu administration
  • Excellent communication skills – written and oral
  • Excellent customer service skills and positive attitude
  • BS/MS degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related subject
